Making Tax Digital is Getting Closer... but there’s no need to Panic

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is no longer a distant idea, it’s on the horizon.
From April 2026, many sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000 will be required to keep digital records and submit updates to HMRC every quarter using compatible software. Those earning over £30,000 are expected to follow from April 2027.
If that sounds overwhelming, you’re not alone. Many people are unsure what it means, whether it applies to them, or how much extra work it will create.
The good news? MTD isn’t about making things harder. Done well, it can actually make managing your finances simpler and more organised.
What will change?
Instead of one annual Self Assessment submission, you’ll:
keep digital records of income and expenses
send quarterly summaries to HMRC
submit a final year-end tax return
What won’t change?
You still only pay tax based on your annual profit
Deadlines for paying tax remain the same
You won’t need to become a tech expert overnight
Why it could be a positive step
Moving to digital records can help you:
✔ stay organised year-round
✔ understand your income and expenses more clearly
✔ avoid last-minute stress
✔ make better financial decisions
What should you do now?
Right now, the most helpful step is simply understanding where you stand. You may not need to change anything yet, but having clarity early removes stress later.
If you’d like help understanding whether MTD applies to you, or how to prepare in a calm and simple way, you’re very welcome to get in touch.
Because good systems should support your life, not complicate it.
