What is a Business Tax Account?

If you run a business in the UK, whether as a sole trader, limited company, or partnership, you may have heard of the Business Tax Account. But what exactly is it, and why does it matter?

In this blog post, I’ll break it down for you…

Your Digital HMRC Dashboard

A Business Tax Account is your online dashboard with HMRC. Think of it as your business’s control panel for all things tax related. It’s where you can manage taxes like:

Corporation Tax

PAYE for employers

VAT

It’s free to set up and available 24/7, giving you a central space to:

✅ View tax liabilities and payments

✅ See deadlines and alerts

✅ Make payments to HMRC

✅ Authorise or remove agents (like an accountant or bookkeeper)

✅ Apply for schemes (like Making Tax Digital)

But My Accountant Handles All That…

If you’ve been in business a while, you might be thinking: “I’ve never needed one of these, my accountant deals with everything.”

That’s completely valid. Many accountants use what’s called an Agent Services Account, which lets them file and manage taxes on your behalf.

However, having your own Business Tax Account doesn’t replace your accountant, it complements them and gives you visibility and control over your taxes and obligations.

How Do I Set Up a Business Tax Account?

Setting up a Business Tax Account is straightforward, and it only takes a few minutes, as long as you have your information to hand.

1. To set up your Business Tax Account:

  • Go to HMRC’s website - Sign in to your HMRC business tax account - GOV.UK

  • If you already have a Government Gateway ID and password, you can use this to sign in.

  • If you have not yet registered, then use the ‘Create Sign In Details’ link and follow the steps.

  • You’ll need your:

    • National Insurance number or UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference)

    • Business details (such as your company number or registration info)

    • Access to your email and phone for security codes

2. Add your business taxes

Once signed in to your Business Tax Account, you can add the taxes your business is registered for, such as VAT, PAYE, or Corporation Tax.

HMRC will then post you an Activation Code, which you’ll need to apply before you can gain access to that service.  It may take 24 hours to show in your account.

Keep your login details safeYour Government Gateway user ID is a 12-digit number.

You will need a different login for the Business Tax Account and the Personal Tax Account, so make sure you can identify which is which later.

This is your business's direct link to HMRC.
